Cookeville Budget Up for Consideration
Thursday is the night that the Cookeville city council will meet to consider approval of the city's budget for the 2009-2010 fiscal year. The council will also set the property tax rate for the upcoming year. City officials say, in spite of less than expected revenue from sales taxes over the past year, they do not expect to increase taxes to fund next year's budget. What they probably will do is to increase the city's water and sewer rates -- at least for some residents. A consultant told the council earlier this year that they needed to establish a system that provides more flexibility in the rate structure. He says the new rate structure would mean higher bills for most customers, but actually lower the monthly bill for those who don't use much water. The council will also consider on final reading an ordinance which paves the way for the installation of red light cameras, but they say the actual decision to go forward with such technology has not yet been made.
