Local Residents Recognized by Historic Commission

A number of local individuals and organizations have been recognized by the Tennessee Historical Commission for Certificate of Merit Awards. They include: the Sutton General Store in the Granville community of Jackson County. The award honors Harold Sutton and the Granville Museum board and volunteers. Sutton spent approximately $200,000 toward restoring the long-vacant store before donating it to the museum. Also receiving certificates were Dr. Michael Birdwell of Cookeville, pictured here, for his work to save York Institute and as a recognized scholar specializing in the study of Sgt. Alvin C. York’s life. Fentress County mayor John Mullinix and the Sgt. York Patriotic Foundation were also recognized. The commission says the awards are intended to recognize historic preservation projects as well as work in the field of history.
