Zoning Change to Allow Fraternity Expansion
A portion of Cookeville near Tennessee Tech University may soon have more fraternity houses. The city council this month OK'd on first reading an ordinance which will change the zoning on several pieces of property, located between 5th and 7th Street, Mahler and Walnut Avenues, from a commercial and medical services district to what's called the University district. City planner James Mills says the rezoning request was initiated by Phi Gamma Delta fraternity, but is also supported by several other property owners in the area. The new zoning will allow the fraternites to purchase new or adjacent properties on which to locate their organizations.
