Jobless Rate Improves in Putnam County

Putnam County may be showing signs of an economic recovery. Labor Department figures released Thursday show the jobless rate here is 9.9 percent, down about half a point from the month before. It's an improvement many local officials were hoping for, but they say it's too soon to tell if the uptick is more or less permanent. While the unemployment rate is just under ten percent for the month of July, it is still three points higher than it was at this time last year. And most of the counties surrounding Putnam have a jobless rate that remains in the double digits. In what officials describe as the Cookeville micropolitan area, there were 5,500 people out of a job last month.
