Putnam School System Begins New Year

Some 10,000 students in the Putnam County school system wil be going back to class today as the 2009-2010 school year begins. Several hundred of them will be in new surroundings. School officials say classes are returning to Jere Whitson Elementary School, two years after a fire destroyed part of that building. Students will also be seeing the new Algood Elementary for the first time. Today's a two-hour day, but buses will be running. Tomorrow is a teacher work day and Wednesday will be the first full day of school. Schools director Kathleen Airhart reminds parents that the schedule for all schools will be 8 am to 3 pm.
