Robbery Suspect Hospitalized
A Putnam County man, who was shot by a sheriff's deputy last week, is expected to be hospitalized for several days. Authorities say 40-year-old Raymond Lee Kirby was shot by a member of the department's SWAT team as he reportedly made a threatening move toward officers who were trying to take him into custody. Kirby's vehicle had been stopped after a woman had called authorities last week to report that he had robbed her at gunpoint. Detective Doug Burgess was the first officer to locate the suspect's vehicle and, after a brief chase, got it blocked in on the dead end of Sarah Thomas Road. But authorities say Kirby refused to get out of the vehicle and give up, so officers spent nearly two hours negotiating with him before the SWAT team officer had to shoot. Sheriff David Andrews says the evidence concerning the robbery will be presented this week to the Putnam County grand jury. The shooting is under routine review by the TBI.
