Sparta Woman Pleads to Embezzlement Charge

A Sparta woman may have to mortgage or sell the family farm in order to pay back all of the money she has admitted to stealing from her employer in Cookeville. Court officials say 48-year-old Janet Lynn Jared was originally indicted on a charge of theft over $60,000. That charge came out of an investigation which revealed that she had stolen more than $114,000 over of two-year period from the business accounts of a home repair business for which she was the bookkeeper. The original theft charge is a Class B felony, which could have resulted in jail time. Officials say Jared agreed instead to plead guilty to the lesser charge of theft over $10,000 and has agreed to pay back the money.
