World War II Veteran Recognized
Representative Bart Gordon held a ceremony this week in Cookeville to present family members of 1st Lieutenant John Joseph Slein with seven long-overdue World War II service medals. Gordon said, "Lt. Slein courageously served our country during the War and lost his life while doing so." He said, "It's never too late to honor and recognize the heroic sacrifice of soldiers like Lt. Slein." Slein's World War II service began in October 1942 - he was a bomber pilot for the U.S. Air Force. On July 25, 1944, Slein was killed when his plane was shot down over St. Lo, France. Gordon helped Slein's brother, William J. Slein, obtain the military medals and decorations.
