Cookevile Council OK's Annexation
The vote wasn't unanimous, but the majority of the Cookeville city council Thursday night voted to annex an area north of town into the city limits. The area is generally surrounded by Freehill Road and Choate Cemetery Road. Some residents of the area spoke against the idea at a public hearing conducting during the council meeting, saying they could see no real benefit to them for the extra taxes they will soon be paying. And at least two council members, Ricky Shelton and Sam Sallee, said they had concerns about how much it would cost the city of Cookeville to provide services to the annexed area. They said the current economic climate made the annexation proposal less than desirable, especially -- as Shelton said -- from a strictly business point of view.
