Cookeville Man Charged With Attempted Homicide

An October 19th court date has been set for a Cookeville man, facing charges of aggravated assault, kidnapping and attempted criminal homicide. Police say the incident occurred at a trailer park on Scenic Drive Friday night. 43-year-old David Newcomb is accused of trying to kill his girlfriend, reportedly by setting her on fire. According to a report by Officer Chris Fergunson, police arrived on the scene to find the victim running from the residence, yelling "He's trying to kill me." Ferguson later found Newcomb with a gas can in one hand and a lighter in the other. The officer says he told Newcomb to drop the can, but ended up having to "take him to the ground." Ferguson says gasoline was splashed all over the place in the process and claims that Newcomb then began to "set things on fire." He allegedly set fire to a couch and also tried to set fire to Ferguson, singeing the hair on the officer's arm. Police say the couple had apparently gotten into an argument while drinking.
