Cookeville Motel Reports Internet Fraud

Cookeville police are investigating a new twist on a familiar report of Internet fraud. Authorities say it usually involves people who have been sent a fake check or money order for things they have offered for sale on the Internet. In this case, police say the would-be victim was the Alpine Lodge motel, where someone had apparently agreed to rent several rooms for a long period of time. The cost of the rental was estimated to be about $60,000, but a check arrived for more than $275,000. The motel owner also got an e-mail stating that she should go ahead and cash the check and send back the difference. But when she contacted the company whose name was on the check, she was informed that it was a forgery. The criminal investigation division is following up on the case.
