Seat Belt Violation Leads to Drug Charges

A seat belt violation has led to a Cookeville man being charged with possession of drugs for re-sale. Cookeville police officer Josh Ward says he stopped a car on Jere Whitson Road after noticing that the front seat passenger was not wearing a seat belt. That passenger was identified as 23-year-old Billy Joe White of Broad Street. Ward says he noticed an odor of marijuan and says that White consented to a search. The officer claims that while performing that search, he "felt an unnatural bulge" in White's crotch area. White then removed a plastic bag from his pants, which reportedly contained 84 grams of marijuana. He was then placed under arrest and booked into the Putnam County jail. He was also issued a citation for the seatbelt violation.
