State of Tennessee Sues Cookeville Company

A Cookeville company has been named in a lawsuit filed by the state attorney general's office. The state says the company is using misleading advertisements aimed at Hispanic immigrants. State officials said the lawsuit is against Gelsy Cordero, individually and doing business as ABC Linguistics in Cookeville. They say that company and other individuals calling themselves notarios publicos are not licensed to practice law in Tennessee and should include that disclaimer in all advertisements. In many Spanish-speaking countries, a notario publico is an attorney who has been specially appointed to assist in certain common, everyday transactions. In America, notary publics can only administer oaths and witness signatures.
