Assault Charges Brought In Two Cases

A Cookeville man was arraigned yesterday on charges of aggravated assault, following an incident outside a local bar on Christmas Eve. Police say 21-year-old Courtney Michael Barrett of East 6th Street was arrested the day after the incident in the parking lot of the Hawg Barn tavern. The 19-year-old victim told police that he was attacked as he was sitting in his car when a man he knows came up and asked to use his cell phone. He says that man then hit him in the nose and stole his wallet, which contained more than two thousand dollars in cash. The victim says that as he was struggling to get his wallet back, Barrett came up and also began attacking him. Meanwhile, in a separate case, 35-year-old Ruben Vasquez Jr. of North Chestnut Street in Monterey was charged with assault after allegedly hitting a homeowner on Gibbons Road with a stick. Vasquez had reportedly been fleeing the scene of an accident on Highway 111 when he encountered the homeowner and knocked him down.
