Dog Shooting and Dog Theft Being Investigated

The shooting of one dog and the theft of two others are among the cases under investigation today by the Putnam County sheriff's department. A woman on Heartland Lane told the sheriff's department that someone had stolen two dogs from her -- one a black cocker spaniel and the other a yellow retriever. The woman said that she had owned one of the dogs for ten years and the other for five years and that they had never before left her yard. They were reported missing on Christmas Day. Meanwhile, a resident of Long Lane told the sheriff's department that he found a dog bleeding near his home and took it to the vet to discover the animal had been shot in the head with a .22 caliber bullet and that the bullet was still in the dog's jaw. Authorities told the man, who had spent more than four hundred dollars on veterinary bills, that he could keep the dog as long as no one else claimed ownership.
