Man Shot While Allegedly Burglarizing Car

Cookeville police are continuing their investigation into a shooting incident which was reported early Thursday. At about 12:40 am Thursday, authorities responded to a burglary incident at 4601 Lovelady Road. A resident there, 29-year-old Byron Justin Parrott, had discovered an alleged burglar in his father's vehicle. He confronted the suspect and attempted to detain him at gunpoint. But -- according to the victim’s statement and other evidence at the scene -- the suspect did not comply with the victim’s instructions and became aggressive. Police say that resulted in Parrott shooting first into the air and then at the suspect, who was later identified as 33-year-old Kenneth Wayne Jones. Police say even through he was shot several times, Jones managed to flee the scene. Some two hours later, he was located at a home on Joe Rawlings Road after his father called the sheriff's department. Jones was taken to Cookeville Regional Medical Center for treatment and later transferred to Vanderbilt Hospital. As in all use-of-force incidents, police say this particular incident will be thoroughly reviewed by investigators and then by the District Attorney Generals Office. Det. Sgt. Tammy Goolsby is investigating.
