Cookeville Looking At Flood Insurance Options

The city of Cookeville is taking steps which may result in lower flood insurance premiums for local residents. Officials say the city is working to join a flood insurance program that works like the fire ratings program, known as ISO. Cookeville is taking steps to join the National Flood Insurance Program's Community Rating System. If they are successful, homeowners would qualify for cheaper insurance rates. Under the system, a higher rating for the city means lower insurance premiums for most homeowners. Right now, on a scale of 1 to 10 Cookeville scores a 2. City officials said with improvements they can get the rating up to an 8. Flood waters hit Cookeville neighborhoods twice this past summer once in May and again in August.
