Discovery Channel To Film Putnam Schools

A crew from the Discovery Channel will be in Cookeville Friday, filming throughout the Putnam County school system.  Officials say the network is doing a story about First To The Top initiatives, a program whereby the federal government has given school systems millions of dollars for innovative programs. In Putnam County, filmmakers are expected to highlight the so-called VITAL program, which stands for Virtual Instruction To Accentuate Learning.  They'll also be talking to local educators about a renewed focus on what are called STEM subjects in grades K through 8. STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.  The school board Thursday will be considering approval to recognize a STEM elective focus for the local high schools.
